General Discussion / lighthouse mercury earthquake
Last post by fluorite - January 23, 2022, 04:10:59 AM
(1) Borinquen Lighthouse, Puerto Rico,
Earthquakes continued to affect Point Borinquen Lighthouse even in its new location.
On August 18, 1925, an earthquake extinguished the light and caused some of the mercury used to revolve the lens
to slosh out onto the lantern room floor.

(2) Nakkehoved lighthouse,
During the earthquake in 2008, Nakkehoved lighthouse in Gilleleje, Denmark, wobbled so much that some of the 30 litres of mercury leaked out. Naturally, this resulted in an order from the environmental authorities to remove the old mercury in its entirety.

(3) Cape North Lighthouse,
An earthquake on July 3, 2010 caused a mercury spill within the lighthouse, resulting in a temporary closure and a cleanup that cost thousands of dollars,

Quality really poor. I can't understand even shape of the tower, if it is rectangular or round :(
It seems it was somewhere by the beach, such towers often were destroyed due to erosion.
Will try to search something similar...

The attached photo was cropped from a scan of an old print that was probably taken in the 1950s on the Atlantic coast of the US somewhere between New Jersey and Massachusetts. If anyone can identify the lighthouse I'll know where the photograph was taken. Sorry about the poor quality; it's the best I could get from a bad print.

This was my thought too. Looks like there was no other lighthouse at this time in Konstanza.
I found a second picture of the King Carol I lighthouses from Oct 1916. I might post the second one.
Many thanks.

Lighthouse identification / Old Konstanza mole head light
Last post by kwolfgang - January 13, 2022, 03:38:40 PM
I found a picture of the Konstanza (Romania) harbor that dates between 1914 and 1917.
The quay shows a mole head light. I can't find a historic mape of the harbor. So I don't know if this quay or the light still exists.
Who can help to identify thsi old mole light?
