Tulum El Castillo ancient lighthouse
Built by the Maya, this structure was used ingeniously as a lighthouse to guide returning fisherman; when fires could be seen from the sea through both openings the boat was lined up properly to enter the harbor. This system was still in use when a Spanish expedition under Juan de Grijalva reached Tulum in 1518.
