Inner Farne is famous as the site of an ancient monastery, dating from St. Cuthbert's residence on the island in the late seventh century. The lighthouse was authorized by King Charles II. Trinity House says merchants refused to pay dues for the light and it was not lit, but there is other evidence that it was in use at least sporadically fro many years and continuously starting in 1784.
