Ben Butler's Toothpick daymark This old navigational daymark on Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts, is known as Ben Butler's Toothpick; it's real name is the Black Rock Beacon. Ben Butler (1818-93) was a general in the Civil War and later a congressman and governor of Massachusetts. He loved sailing and lived in Newburyport for a while, and it's said that it was influence as a congressman that led to the building of the marker.
