Elburg, a tidal merchant-& fishery port on the East shore of the Zuiderzee, a coast without deep water. From the Elburg harbor-channel a mole was built in 1853 into deeper water, with a light in line with the older Vischpoort light. In 1911 the ducdalf`s were built around the molehead to avoid ships hitting the basalt. Elburgs fishery decline started in 1930, building of the Afsluitdijk, the Zuiderzee became IJsselmeer. The winning of new land went on, in 1956 the dikes of the Oostelijk Flevolandpolder were closed, leaving Elburg on a smaller water, the Drontermeer.
On this picture there is open sea in front, on the other land.
